Specific fields of activity may include: agriculture, including extension services and use of new technologies; food science and technology; nutrition education or micronutrient fortification programmes; water management; protection of water resources; etc.

The Prize is open to individuals, not-for-profit organisations, governmental organisations, private and social enterprises, and academic institutions.
