Fund Market Statistics – August 2012 Swiss fund market stable at just under CHF 700 billion

Basel, 19 September 2012 – In August 2012, the volume of assets placed in the investment funds covered by the statistics reached some CHF 699 billion, an increase of CHF 4.8 billion month-on-month.

At the end of August 2012, the total volume of assets in the investment funds covered by the statistics compiled by Swiss Fund Data AG and Lipper stood at around CHF 699.0 billion, compared with CHF 694.2 billion in July. Of this figure of just under CHF 700 billion, Swiss funds for institutional investors accounted for CHF 273.3 billion.

“There was a relatively stable development in the month under review. The equity markets showed more of a sideways trend. Currency effects – which were still having a strong influence in July – were almost entirely absent as the CHF recovered against the EUR and USD. It therefore comes as no surprise that fund volumes remained roughly on a par month-on-month in August,” said Dr. Matthäus Den Otter, CEO of the Swiss Funds Association SFA. By comparison, the figures for selected indexes were as follows: Dow Jones +0.63%, S&P 500 +1.98%, and SMI -0.18%. The EUR and USD lost 0.02% and 2.26% respectively against the CHF.

Net inflows totaled CHF 2.2 billion in August 2012. Bond funds attracted the most new money (CHF 2.3 billion), followed by money market funds (CHF 498 million) and commodities funds (CHF 366 million). There were outflows from asset allocation funds (CHF 179 million) and especially equity funds (CHF 755 million). The following equity fund categories suffered outflows in particular: UK, US, Global, and Emerging Markets Global. Development of the Swiss fund market in August 2012 (amounts in CHF millions)

The statistics are based on the FINMA authorization list and cover all funds under Swiss law as well as all foreign funds authorized for public sale in Switzerland, including their institutional unit classes. Foreign funds restricted exclusively to qualified investors are not covered by the statistics given that these products are only placed privately and cannot receive FINMA authorization.
