Turning waste into energyInnovative ethanol production in a minimum of space Non-food biomass and advanced waste-to-energy concepts show great potential as providers of renewable fuel for transportation but at the same time pose new challenges for biorefinery processes. Sulzer is very active in this promising new field and offers complete process solutions and process plants, both skid-mounted and built-on-site. Recently, Sulzer delivered a modular bioethanol distillation unit to the Finnish company St1 Biofuels Oy. This project is a prime example of an innovative application of Sulzer’s process technologies to bioethanol production, in combination with its skid-mounted assembly concept. Non-stop green energyRapid on-site wind turbine service In the polymer-manufacturing industry, raw materials undergo chemical conversion during their processing into finished products. These conversion processes very often require conveying fluids with a wide range of characteristics. The liquids can be very hot or cold, they may be chemically aggressive, or they can contain solids or fibers. With the AHLSTAR process pump series, Sulzer meets the requirements of chemical process industries. Author: Jason Horton, Sulzer Dowding & Mills |

Eco-friendly driving pleasureCoating solutions for the automotive industry Macromolecules are formed by the polymerization of base molecules and form the basis of life. For example, proteins consist of thousands of amino acids, and nucleic acids build up the genetic code from millions of nucleotides. Spiders have an amazing technique for building complex spatial structures from protein chains. Authors: Annette Norin, Emilio Rodríguez Cabeo, Jörg Vetter, Sulzer Metaplas |

S3 construction saves material and weightImproved synchronization in vehicle transmissions High-performance transmission components generally lead to greater material use and complexity. This not only increases manufacturing costs but also affects the environment in a negative way. The engineers at Sulzer Friction Systems show that there is another way. They have developed the innovative S3 (Segmented Synchronizer System) transmission synchronization, which guarantees high performance capabilities with reduced material consumption and weight.
